Letter to President George W. Bush

May 20, 2008

President George W. Bush
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W.
Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President:

On November 17, 2007, I first forwarded the names of four individuals for White House consideration to fill the vacancies that became anticipated after Justices Lewis Babcock and Walker Miller, then serving on the Colorado District of the United States District Court, announced their intention of taking senior status in early 2008. After the death of Justice Phillip Figa created a third vacancy in January, I submitted the names of three additional individuals to be considered by the White House. Most recently, Senator Salazar, in a letter dated April 3, 2008, forwarded to White House Counsel Fred Fielding the names of three individuals to fill these vacancies on the Colorado U.S. District Court.

As the 110th Congress enters its final stretch, I request that the White House expedite the nomination process so the Senate can act to fill the three vacancies on the Colorado U.S. District Court.

Due to the fact that the Colorado U.S. District Court has had vacancies since the beginning of this year, it is critical that these positions be filled as soon as possible. Senator Salazar and I appreciate the White House's effort to keep both of us informed of developments in this nominating process. We remain hopeful that the White House will act quickly in nominating three individuals to fill the vacancies on the Colorado U.S. District Court. While we will remain
patient as we have tried to be throughout this process, we also urge the need for haste. It is imperative to the functioning of Colorado's judicial system that the nominating process in the United States Senate begins soon.

Thank you in advance for your efforts to ensure that consideration is given to the recommended individuals and that nominations are sent to the U.S. Senate in a timely manner so that nominees may be confirmed in this legislative session. I look forward to working with you on successfully filling these three vacancies on the Colorado U.S. District Court.

Sincerely,

Wayne Allard
United States Senator

cc: United States Senator Ken Salazar
cc: Fred Fielding, White House Counsel
